In the ever more crowded world we live in, saving space is very important and there are a few different options you can use to open up your living space. The simplest solutions are just the use of normal pieces of furniture in unique ways.
Right off the bat we should take another look at cheap bunk beds. Many people think they are just for kids but they are a great space saving solution for every bedroom. Today there are more adult sized options and sophisticated designs that you can be proud to have as a part of your living space. You can also look into loft beds, which are similar to bunk beds but raise the sleeping space up and open up more of the floor. Slipping a second bed into this space or even a work desk looks great and will more efficiently use the footprint of the piece.
Don’t forget about shelving. There is a lot of unused space in and apartment or house. It’s height. Especially in old style house with high ceilings, this is a great solution. A set of shelves in a closet can drastically increase their total storage space. If you have a little money to play with you can have library style book cases all the way to the ceiling and have a very classy look with a track mounted ladder for access to higher shelves.
In the kitchen you should look at the ceiling for a little extra area. Hanging wine glass racks are a great choice for directly over the sink. Not only does this clear up a shelf for storage but you with the glasses hanging directly over the basin you can hang them wet and let them drip dry. This clears up more counter space and more space in the drying rack or dish washer. It’s also a great way to avoid broken glasses in the dishwasher.
If you are working in our own home and have the option to alter the walls you can build most of these solutions directly into the walls and save even more space. In old style houses there are sometimes a space recessed into the wall that was originally intended for a hideaway ironing board. Since these are most often found in the kitchen it’s a great idea to build some small shelves into them and use it for storing spices and other small, shelf stable condiments.
Whether it’s shelves or bunk beds, you’ll be surprised how much space some of these options will open up in a small apartment. Even in larger houses these are some great ideas to more effectively use the space you have while maintaining an outwardly orderly feel.
